In temperatures of around the high 20's, up to one point on the stage measuring about 40C, the first day's 21 mile stage was completed in 3hrs 47mins, giving an overall placing of 62 out of the 854 starters. A report of blisters, dehydration and any other bits that hurt may follow, should Steven have any fuel left in the tank to consider sending a report home of today's efforts. I know a good final finishing position for the whole event is the ultimate aim, but the arthritic knees and a stress fracture before starting the event would lend more to just finishing than attempting maximum attack. However, knowing his own body and keeping a positive focus on why he's doing this will keep him going.
